Ever heard of a house that has “zero cost of living?” Well, if you haven’t until now, such a house does exist. This “zero cost of living” house, built by a couple named Sangeeth and Kavya, has been making waves on social media. The sustainable methods they’ve used to achieve this lifestyle have impressed the internet, with many expressing a desire to live similarly.
Their entire experience, documented in a video showing how the house functions with “zero cost of living,” was posted on Instagram by the couple under the account @lifeonroads_. In the video, Kavya explains how they live in a home that costs them nothing to maintain. She begins by saying, “We are a couple who were called stupid for investing 60 percent of our savings to build a home which most people would find messy. But what’s interesting is, now our little home has zero cost of living.”
She further elaborates on the different systems they’ve set up to make their home entirely self-sufficient. The couple grows their own vegetables and raises fish in a kitchen garden and pond, while also cultivating their own rice for daily needs. For protein, they rely on fresh eggs and milk from chickens, cows, and hens they rear themselves. To manage waste and reduce energy consumption, their home is equipped with a biogas plant and a wet waste processing system. Additionally, one room is dedicated to growing mushrooms, and they also harvest their own honey, making their lifestyle both sustainable and resourceful.
She adds in the video, “And whatever we have extra, we sell so that we can save a bit more money to keep building our dream house. In this modern world, if you find these things interesting, you’re probably among the very few currently working toward a sustainable retirement plan.”

The video was captioned, “More than the money, the thought is always to wake up in a home where you never feel stressed or irritated. You definitely have those moments when you sit and talk with your loved ones about little dreams, right? It’s just like that—growing our own food, connected to nature, managing our own waste in a sensibly sustainable setup. Can’t say it’s 100% sustainable, but it’s great to keep trying. Having this conversation after getting our chickens home to the sound of crickets—life feels peaceful. In the next 10 days our mushrooms will sprout, and we’d be happy to share them with a few. After the rain stops, it’s our little dream to build a small tree house! If you could come and give us company, that would be fun.”
The video has gone massively viral, garnering over 33 lakh likes, more than 19,000 comments, and over 33 million views.
